Why your computer is slow

Most “slow computer” problems come down to one of a few things:

  • Old hard drive. Spinning hard drives wear out and slow down dramatically over time. Switching to an SSD is often the single biggest fix.
  • Not enough RAM. Modern Windows and Chrome both need more memory than they used to. 4 GB is misery; 8–16 GB is comfortable.
  • Startup junk. Dozens of little programs all racing to launch the moment you boot up.
  • Malware. Quietly running something in the background that’s eating CPU.

What we’ll do

We’ll look at what’s actually going on — not just hit “clean my registry” and charge you. If a tune-up will fix it, we’ll do that. If you’d benefit much more from an SSD upgrade or more RAM, we’ll tell you what it costs before doing anything.

Honest opinion included

If your computer is genuinely too old to be worth fixing, we’ll say so and help you pick a reasonable replacement instead of charging you for work that won’t help.

Frequently asked

My computer used to be fast. What changed?
Almost always one of four things: the hard drive is wearing out, RAM is too low for modern Windows, dozens of programs are auto-starting on boot, or something malicious is running in the background. We figure out which before doing any work.
Is it worth tuning up an old computer or should I just buy a new one?
Depends on the machine. We look at the actual hardware, tell you what a tune-up or SSD upgrade can realistically do for it, and what a comparable new PC would cost. If the answer is "buy new," we'll say so.
Will a tune-up delete anything?
No. We don't reinstall Windows or wipe files unless that's specifically what you want. Documents, photos, and installed programs stay put.
How long does a tune-up take?
Most we can do over a remote screen-share in 60 to 90 minutes. Hardware upgrades like an SSD or more RAM are typically same-visit in-home and back in service within a couple of hours.
